Aaminah...
Instructor Megan Wright
has been dancing under the stage name Aaminah since she started performing as a belly dancer in 1997. She was
originally introduced to Oriental dancing in her birthplace of Oklahoma City through her first pre-ballet teacher, Billi
McKye, when she was only three years old. Although she pursued ballet as her primary dance interest, she always
longed to return to the intriguing art of Middle Eastern Dance. After studying ballet for twelve years under the famous ballerina
Yvonne Chouteau, Megan hung up her toe shoes, and took a couple years off from dancing.
At the age of seventeen, Megan
sought out Belly Dance instruction from Melody, Billi McKye's daughter. Melody had been introduced to belly dancing
at a young age by her mother, and had gone on to perform professionally in the Mirage Belly Dance Troupe of Austin, TX.
Better known as 'Habiba', Melody has danced in both the Middle East and throughout the U.S., and has made several T.V.
appearances. After her mother's death, Melody returned to Oklahoma and took over as director of her mother's
troupe, known as as The Billi McKye Belly Dancers, whom Megan performed with for several years. Melody is
accomplished in many styles, and shared with Megan her knowledge of Arabic, Egyptian, Pharaonic, Tunisian, Turkish, and
folkloric dances.
After Megan moved away from her home town in Oklahoma, she studied with a few teachers in Virginia
and New Orleans, though mostly doing her studying independently. She currently teaches dance and fitness classes
at the CoExercise Studio in Sneads Ferry, North Carolina.
